KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional politician Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has outlined the four needs of the people’s economy that must be fulfilled to ensure the unity government can stay in power.
Johari, who is a former second finance minister, said the four needs of the people’s economy are food security, quality education, job opportunities, and affordable and accessible housing.
“What do the people want? Four basic things. If the government cannot fulfil these, it will not last.
“No matter which bracket they are in, whether T20, M40 or B40. They need food.. The government should ensure that food security is intact and there are no issues with staple food,” he said during the “Memperkasa Ekonomi Rakyat” (Empowering the People’s Economy) session at the Unity Government National Convention at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur here today.
Johari said the people’s economy and the national economy were interrelated.
“For both to succeed, the government must provide political stability in the country, have integrity and credibility to lead the country and appear competent and experienced to lead the country,” he added.
The country’s economic needs, he said, included bringing in foreign and domestic investment, which would lead to increased national revenue that could fund the people’s needs.
“Investments would lead to more jobs and after that an increase in government revenue through taxes.
“The government can then spend the revenue to build infrastructure such as roads, ports and educational institutions in line with the public’s needs,” he said.
Nineteen parties or the four major coalitions in the unity government have convened for its first national convention.
