Govt appoints Johari Ghani to chair 1MDB task force

KUALA LUMPUR (March 9): Former Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has been appointed to chair a special task force established to resolve issues related to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim  announced this in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (March 9), noting that Johari had raised issues concerning 1MDB in the House, including on the settlement reached by the fund with Goldman Sachs.

“The MP for Titiwangsa (Johari) raised the issue about Goldman Sachs and 1MDB,” said Anwar, who is also the finance minister. “That is why I appointed Titiwangsa to chair a task force to resolve issues related to 1MDB.

“Because I myself do not agree with decisions made in the past, which treated the issue very lightly. Goldman Sachs has profited from our difficulties,” he said when winding up the policy stage debate on the revised Budget 2023.

Last week, during his debate on the revised budget, Johari had urged the government to launch a probe against those involved in the settlement between Goldman Sachs and 1MDB, saying that the US$2.5 billion settlement was too low.

Anwar himself had in January demanded Goldman Sachs to honour its settlement with the Malaysian government, which also included a guarantee of returning US$1.4 billion in 1MDB assets recovered globally.

Subsequent to Anwar’s speech on Thursday, the Dewan Rakyat passed the revised Budget 2023 through a voice vote before the meeting was adjourned.

The House will resume its meeting next Monday to commence the committee stage debate for the revised budget, where MPs will deliberate on specific items under the budget.
