JOHOR BAHRU: The public should be wary of political parties and individuals who play the religious card when on the campaign trail, says an Umno vice-president.
Johari Ghani, who is Titiwangsa MP, said such tactics would only create instability.
“There’s no point in proclaiming ‘membangun bersama Islam’ (developing with Islam), yet the state continues to lag behind (others in terms of development),” he said in a veiled jab at PAS, in light of the state government it leads in Kelantan having adopted the slogan for the recent Merdeka celebration.
Johari was speaking at a campaign event for Suhaizan Kaiat, the Pakatan Harapan candidate in the Pulai parliamentary by-election.
He said there was no need to play the religious card just to win at the polls.
The former second finance minister added that problems such as unemployment could not be resolved through “fanatical politics”.
Stability was needed to overcome economic challenges, he said.
“And this is what we (the government) are doing. It will take a while, but we need to go back to basics,” he said, adding that development was also demanded for under Islam.
